The Special Spice

So many of you tell me that the first thing you do in the morning is check for an update on my Sam. Truthfully, I don't have much to tell you...things are just floating along. But it makes me feel good to know that you're all out there, thinking of us and praying for Sam's wellbeing. So thank you.

Sam started his chemo with little fanfare, and we went back to camp for a second Friday night in a row. We almost didn't make it -- Sam felt very "pukey" (as he says it) and I gave him the option to stay home. Then I reminded him that it was the Last Shabbat of the summer and he made it happen! (He also ate 4 pieces of camp Shabbat chicken, which I'm told tastes better than any other chicken because of the "special camp spice." I'm partial to the challah, myself...and Solly was excited for the popsicles.)

Today, David and Michael returned from camp. We've all missed them so much! There's something so beautiful about the return from camp, the transformation from the camper back into the fold of family...he's already told us a few inappropriate jokes and shared some great stories of his six weeks away from us. His younger siblings are in heaven having him back and I'm just glad that he didn't grow taller than me while he was away.

Where's the bubble when you need it?

In just a few days, Sam will be re-admitted to the hospital to start radiation and conditioning chemotherapy in preparation for his bone marrow transplant. I maintain that a planned admission is far superior to an emergency admission but let's face it, hospital stays are nothing fun. But you have to start so you can finish, right? We have to get this done, we have to make this happen. Our team is in place, and our plans are being made.

It's not easy living here at the Ronald McDonald House, and it's not easy being away from our family and friends. But putting all of my kids to bed tonight, together, gave me a deep feeling of comfort. They are a blessing to each other...and even when things are difficult or frustrating or exhausting, I know that they are the best at healing each other. Much like the "special camp spice" in the chicken, they are the special spice for one another.

And so it goes....
